Being a self-taught artist I'm constantly experimenting with product and surfaces. Recently I was introduced to "AluRim", a new art substrate, by way of free samples. (I know, nothing is free these days but I was one of the lucky ones that got to try it out.)
Joan, owner of Craft Shop Metals, reached out to me on Instagram and asked if I would like some samples to try. Of course, I didn't hesitate. She sent me 3 silver color samples to get started. And can I just say WOW. If you're a pour artist you know the prep work that goes into pouring resin or paint on wood or canvas. Sanding. Sealer. Sanding. Sealer. Tape. Pour. Sanding. Paint. (You get it?) Ugh. With this surface all I did was make sure my work surface was level.
The resin poured on so smoothly. No gap holes from porous areas. No run off from the sides. No drips that need to be sanded. Oh be still my heart. You can use them as trays or add a sawtooth hanger with some clear resin on to the back for wall art. Another really cool thing is that you can use either side to paint on. If you know you want it for a wall you can use the back side without a rim and it will hang easily on the wall without adding anything. They come in 4 different sizes from 6"-18" and 3 different colors of aluminum--silver, gold and rose gold. And, if your feeling really adventurous, you can order custom sizes and shapes. I think they thought of everything that makes an artist life easier.
Now here is the icing on the cake, not only does Craft Shop Metals make these awesome art substrates, their company hires people from rough backgrounds giving them another chance at life. Can we just give them a hallelujah for that!
Check them out. Awesome people. Awesome products. How can you go wrong?
